Song of Roland

This epic french poem tells the story of Roland, a warrior in the service of medieval King Charles, known as Charlemagne (The Hammer). The French King Charles at the succession has been at war with Spain for cardinal years. The only city that remains outside his control is Saragossa, command by Marsile, who is a Saracen also known as Muslim. The time period the Song Of Roland takes place is around the 1100. Marsile addresses his soldiers, telling them that Charles has convey to conquer their land, that he has no army left to fight, and he needs their advice on how to protect their land. Blancandrin, a wise and legitimate adviser to Marsile says to send Charles a protective covering the promise to acquire him in peace, and a commitment to convert to Christianity. He believes that Charles has had exuberant of war, and that this surrender will be enough to convince him to go home without attacking. Blancandrin says that this form of surrender is better than living as a conquered people. In the city of Cordres Charles headquarters, where no Saracens/Muslims remain, Charles sits with several companions including Roland ludicrous themselves with games or swordplay. Blancandrin tells Charles that hes come at Marsiles command, bringing gifts of gold and silver.



Charles therefore tells his soldiers that Saracens has brought these gifts and that Marsile promises to convert to Christianity. Charles does not know if he should trust Marsile so he will have to think about it. Roland insists that Marsile is craft and this is a trick, they should just continue the fight and avenge the cobblers last of the men killed by Marsile. Charles then withdraws his troops to a townspeople called Galne, which was captured by Roland earlier in the war. He waits there for the tribute offered by Spain. He later finds out that it was indeed a lie and the Saracens are coming to attack Roland, but Roland vows to wield Charles and the right to rule.
